K.I.D.S. the story of our safehouse in Vietnam
K.I.D.S. stands for: Kids in Distress. Under this name Studio Bazar had a children´s home built in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, housing thirty orphaned and abandoned girls. This is the story of a unique initiative and how you can do your bit.

How it all started
Some eleven years ago, Julius Jaspers was on one of his numerous business trips to the Far East. He also went to the fascinating and booming Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, and felt that the city grew increasingly close to his heart. Only recently having become father of a son, Julius´ felt that his heart also went out to the children of this city. Every single day, the streets of Ho Chi Minh City are filled with thousands of children scraping together a little money by selling postcards and cigarettes to make themselves a living. They often don¼t have a home to go to at the end of the day. Girls especially, are in danger of ending up in prostitution. Julius decided to do something for these children. With the help of the local Studio Bazar representative the local charity group of the Women´s Charity Association of HCMC was contacted. It was looking for sponsors for three projects. Julius selected a project in the city itself, as he would then be able to go on regular visits. Studio Bazar financed the building of a brand new "safehouse", which houses thirty girls. Moreover, Studio Bazar has committed itself to paying all operating costs for the next ten years. In October 1998 the house was officially opened and named "Sunflower". Since the safehouse was opened, thirty girls between the ages of five and nine have moved in. They have exchanged their life on the streets for a child´s life as it should be, free of worry. They can attend school, play and be sure of healthy nutrition and a roof over their heads. The daily care is in the hands of two supervisors, a manageress and, obviously, a cook.

Any rake-off?
Whenever you donate money to charities, there is bound to be a rake-off. This is not surprising as every charity employs people who have to make a living and who need an office. Moreover, charities often have so many projects running that individual contributors like yourself have no idea which project they are supporting. If, on the other hand, you support the K.I.D.S.-project, you know exactly where your money is going and there is no need to fear any rake-off. Studio Bazar staff do legwork for K.I.D.S. in the boss´s time. Various businesses and institutions, such as Wijnkoperij de Gouden Ton and Serax Belgium, sponsor the project by offering their services, products and money. So it follows that there are no overhead costs. One hundred per cent of your contribution arrives at the right place, that is, with the children.
